Millwall FC are probing footage shared by one of its Lionesses stars which shows a dog behind the wheel of a car.

Madelene Wright, 21, shared the video in an Instagram story, which she filmed from the back seat.

It shows a pal in the driver's seat but with a dog in her hands, as the cute pet places its paws on the wheel.

As the car moves, the animal gives the wheel a slight shift before turning to the camera.

Millwall โ€“ who confirmed Madelene was filming but not driving โ€“ told Daily Star Online they are investigating and are "extremely disappointed".

Madelene shared the footage on her open account to her 19,000 followers, before it was taken down after Millwall told us they were investigating.

A spokesman told us: "Millwall Lionesses are extremely disappointed by the footage and will be reminding all players of their responsibilities as role models as part of a full investigation into the matter."

Under Rule 57 of the Highway Code, dogs or other animals must be restrained while driving "so they cannot distract you".

Road safety charity Brake described the footage as "careless".

A spokesman told us: "This is a concerning video demonstrating careless driving behaviour which could have potentially led to a serious crash.

"Dogs, or other animals, should be suitably restrained when in a car, as set out in the highway code, to avoid distraction.

"We would also urge drivers to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel at all times."

Rule 57 reads: "When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly.

"A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars."

Madelene joined Millwall Lionesses in August this year.

Her team currently sit third in the Division One South.

Daily Star Online has approached Madelene for a response.
