The UK Government has issued a Yellow Heat Health Alert – and weather forecasters say temperatures are only going to get hotter.

The UK Health Security Agency's warning covers six regions in England – the West Midlands, East Midlands, East of England, London, South East and South West – and is in place until 9am on Saturday (August 19).

"Minor impacts are probable" including increased risk of mortality for the vulnerable and increased potential for "very warm" conditions inside, the warning states.

According to the Met Office, temperatures are expected to peak at 28C in England on Friday (August 18).

The Met Office said: "However, from later on Friday we will also see some heavy, at times thundery, rain for many, as active weather fronts move from the southwest to the northeast, clearing northern Scotland on Saturday afternoon.

"Details on the location of the heaviest rain are still being determined, and thereโ€™s a chance of Met Office warnings being issued with some potentially impactful rain on the way for some."

Despite things cooling off over the weekend bringing the Yellow Heat Health Alert to an end, weather forecasters expect conditions to be even warmer at the start of next week.

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: "Through next week, the jet stream is likely to become more amplified, and when this happens we become more likely to see warm air across the continent push north during next week, though low pressure is more likely to be in charge in northern areas."

Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis said temperatures could peak at 30C on Tuesday (August 22) "as a heat dome building north-east from Iberia across France clips south-east England".

He explained: "Hot weather building over France, where temperatures look to reach 40C as far north as Paris, will creep into the south-east of England by Tuesday, where temperatures may reach 30C in the afternoon under sunny skies and humid too.

"Perhaps a risk of thundery showers pushing into the south mid-week, while the north turns drier and high pressure builds in here."
