    A massive explosion at a petrol station has left one person dead and a further 46 injured.

    Early reports indicate one person has so far died in the terrifying blast at a petrol station in Bucharest prompting a large scale evacuation amid fears of another blow.

    The Romanian capital confirmed reports of an explosion as the fire spread towards two tanks and a nearby house, while a second fire was reported as the first was put out.

    Emergency services and rescue workers attempting to put out the first fire were met with the blast of a second, with the liquified natural gas site bursting into flames.

    Workers on the scene attempted to put out the blaze before it erupted in a blinding inferno which spread through the streets of Bucharest forcing many to run for their lives.

    Video footage shared on social media captured the harrowing sounds of large bangs from the LPG station, with billowing smoke and raging flames creating terrifying war-like scenes.

    A massive plume of fire could also be seen, with the liquified petroleum gas exploding in a ball of extreme heat, albawabanews reported.

    Romanian emergency rescue service SMURD says the second explosion took place shortly after the first blast, while several burn victims were transported to hospital.

    They are said to have received extensive injuries, with the Romanian health minister, Alexandru Rafila, confirming the horror blasts had killed one person.

    Romania's directorate for emergency services, Raed Arafat, says 26 firefighters sustained injuries in the second explosion as residents are evacuated from the surrounding area.

    Emergency services are now setting up a 750 metre radius of evacuation, with one LPG tank still at risk of exploding.
