Russia threatens NATO with nuclear and chemical weapons as tensions soar
A top Russian politician has threatened the US and its NATO allies with weapons of mass destruction as tensions soar over the war in Ukraine.
Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said today that the “destructive” policies of the US and its allies were increasing the risk that nuclear, chemical and biological weapons could be used.
The close Vladimir Putin ally said: “The natural consequence of the United States’ destructive policies is the deterioration in the global security.”
According to the state-run TASS News Agency, he added: “The risk that nuclear, chemical and biological weapons will be used is increasing. The international arms control regime has been undermined.”
The comments come just one day after Russia ripped up a long-standing treaty with NATO which limited conventional forces in Europe sparking fears of escalation on the continent.

In addition, Putin recently withdrew Russia from the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty which prevented Moscow from carrying out nuclear tests.
Earlier this week, the Kremlin claimed it test-fired a submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads.
The news comes amid soaring tensions as Russian forces fail to achieve their objectives in Ukraine. For months, the battlefield there has become relatively static with few significant advancements on both sides.

Recently, there have been reports in Western media that US and European officials have broached the idea of peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has ruled out such talks, however, even as conditions on the ground worsen for Ukraine.
Polls taken in the country show that most of the Ukrainian public support his decision. He has ruled out giving up any territory to Russia.
Many analysts have also noted that a ceasefire could give Russia time to reequip and rearm, allowing Moscow to launch another invasion in the near future.
