Met Office says Brits face two weather scenarios – and one is ‘significant snow’

A weather scenario could unfold in the coming days that would bring "significant snow" to the UK, according to the Met Office.

Although the white stuff will be falling over hilltops in Scotland this weekend, the vast majority of Brits are expected to miss out.

However, from early next week Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Harris said "we expect to see a return to widely cold" conditions. And that could bring about two different outcomes.

At first, Harris said "some rain, or showers, are likely to affect some parts of the east coast". These showers could turn "increasingly wintry" as the week progresses.

Beyond this, confidence in the forecast "falls". Harris said the "most likely" outcome beyond mid-week is that we'll see a band of rain moving across the country from the west to the east.

Another possible scenario is for a "more active weather system" to arrive from the southwest, according to Harris. This is what could bring snow to millions of Brits.

If this weather system is to arrive, Harris said we can expect "more widespread rain, stronger winds, and the potential for more significant snowfall should the air over the UK become sufficiently cold ahead of it". It should become clearer nearer the time which of these two weather fronts is heading our way.

Harris added: "Either way, a continuation of colder than average conditions seems most likely, more details will become clear over the coming days and, as you would expect, we will be monitoring developments in the forecast closely."

Advanced weather modelling maps from WX Charts' indicate that the second of those two possibilities – snow – is coming. You can see the maps by clicking here.
