In the heart of Vatican City, the Pontifical Swiss Guard proudly holds the distinction of being the world’s oldest and smallest army.
Since its establishment in 1506, this elite force of 110 guards, as of 2006, has been a symbol of security and tradition within the Vatican.
Clad in their iconic blue, red, and yellow uniforms, Swiss Guards are a unique group with specific eligibility criteria.
Only single, Swiss-Catholic men measuring at least 1.7 meters (5 feet 8 inches) tall have the honour of donning this distinguished attire, showcasing both physical prowess and personal commitment. As of 2015, the guards receive a tax-free salary of just £1,128 a month (€1,300).
Originating during the 16th century, the Swiss Guard’s partnership with the Vatican was formalised on January 21, 1506.
