Lucy Letby wrote chilling sympathy card to parents of baby she murdered

A nurse found guilty of murdering seven babies and trying to kill six more in a neonatal unit was found with a sympathy note to the parents of a dead child.

Lucy Letby, 33, denied getting a "thrill" from images of sympathy cards she sent to grieving parents, Manchester Crown Court has heard.

The card was sent to the baby girl's parents on the eve of her funeral, and a photograph of it was taken at the unit where she murdered "Child I" weeks before.

She told the police: "I often take pictures of any cards that I have sent, even birthday cards – anything like that. I often take pictures of them.

“It was upsetting losing (Child I) and I think it was nice to remember the kind words that I hoped I’d shared with that family.

The letter read: “There are no words to make this time any easier.

“It was a real priviledge (sic) to care for (Child I) and get to know you as a family – a family who always put (Child I) first and did everything possible for her.

“She will always be a part of your lives and we will never forget her.

“Thinking of you today and always – sorry I cannot be there to say goodbye.

“Lots of love Lucy x.”

Another picture of a thank you card from the parents of baby twin boys, one of whom Letby had murdered and the other attempted to, was also found.

A record of emergency drugs administered to an infant written on a piece of paper towel from Countess of Chester Hospital was also located.

She gave rescue breaths to Child M having injected air into his bloodstream beforehand, and injecting his brother with insulin.

She denied keeping this as a souvenir of the attack.

During searches of her address, a number of closely written notes were discovered.

On one green Post-it note she wrote: “I don’t deserve to live. I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to care for them”, “I am a horrible evil person” and in capital letters “I am evil I did this”.
