Kyiv is turning the tide against Russia from Black Sea HQ strike to weapons pact

Social media users claim Ukraine media edited Zelensky’s UN speech

Ukraine has dealt a series of decisive blows against the Russian military this week, more than three months after launching its counteroffensive.

A number of military breakthroughs in recent days appear to have turned the tide of the war, which started in February last year.

This includes devastating psychological blows to the Kremlin, new weapons from the West, and crucial wins on the battlefield.

On Friday, Ukraine launched its most devastating attack yet on Crimea, after striking the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea fleet.

Kyiv, which has ramped up its attacks on Crimea in recent weeks, timed its missile strikes with a meeting of senior military commanders.

Ukraine’s top intelligence chief, Kyrylo Budanov, said that at least nine people were killed and 16 were injured in the attack.

Mr Budanov confirmed earlier today that at least two Russian generals were injured in the attack, including the chief commander of the group, Colonel General Alexander Romanchuk, who is in “very serious condition”.

Pavel Felgenhauer, a defence analyst, told Al Jazeera that Ukraine’s recent strikes in Crimea created a significant “psychological effect” back in Moscow.

The strike was carried out using Storm Shadow missiles, which were supplied by Britain and France.

The decisive blow came just a day after Joe Biden met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

President Biden agreed to give Ukraine advanced long-range missiles, specifically ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 190 miles (300km).

This would enable Kyiv to hit Russian targets deep behind the front line, according to US officials.

After the Biden-Zelensky talks, the US announced a new tranche of £265m in military aid – including artillery and ammunition – for Ukraine while its Abrams tanks will be delivered to Kyiv next week.

President Zelensky, who also delivered a speech at the UN General Assembly this week, went on to visit Canada where he managed to secure £393 million in military aid to Ukraine over the next three years.

Meanwhile, on the battlefield, General Oleksandr Tarnavsky, who leads Ukraine’s counteroffensive, confirmed that his forces have broken through in the southern village of Verbove this week.

He added that Kyiv’s army has broken through several other Russian lines across southern Ukraine.

General Tarnavsky hinted that an even bigger breakthrough was imminent during an interview with CNN on Friday.

He said: “I think it will happen after Tokmak.”

Tomark serves as a southern strategic hub for Russia, located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the positions where Ukrainian troops are currently fighting.

Meanwhile, the latest intelligence briefing today from the UK Ministry of Defence revealed that three successive commanders of one of Russia’s most prestigious airborne regiments have either resigned or been killed since its invasion of Ukraine.

The MoD said the weakening of the 247th Guards Air Assault Landing Regiment shows the “extreme attrition and high turnover in Russia’s deployed military, even amongst relatively senior ranks”.

General Mark Milley, who is departing his post as top US general, used his final Ukraine Defence Contact Group speech to confirm that Ukraine has liberated more than half of the previously Russian-occupied territory on its soil.

In the past week, Ukraine has retaken two villages southwest of Bakhmut in the east.

Last month, its soldiers broke through Russia’s first defensive line in nearby Zaporizhzhia Oblast, having cleared a path through miles-deep minefields.
