Glam mum used pals bank card for hotel stays and £2k deposit on luxury Mercedes

A glam mum has admitted to defrauding her best friend of 17 years by using her bank card to pay a £2000 deposit on a plush Mercedes at a luxury car dealership.

Anika Allan, 38, also used the card for lavish hotel stays before the scam was discovered. Allan appeared in court on Tuesday (December 12) and pleaded guilty to fraudulently paying for goods and services totalling £2,753.87.

The court heard how Allan and former pal Anna Renton had been "best friends" for nearly two decades, with their children playing together and even joining each other on family holidays. However, Allan ended this friendship with her fraudulent transactions.

The prosecutor explained that Allan contacted a Mercedes dealership in Newbridge, near Edinburgh, Scotland, in August 2019 and provided a £2000 deposit for a car using Anna's Barclaycard details, reports the Daily Record.

Anna was alerted to unauthorised transactions from her account, including payments for hotels. The matter was reported to the police, and an inquiry began. Allan was cautioned and charged but made no reply.

Defence agent James Stewart revealed that the "relationship" between Allan and Anna had ended in December 2019.

He added: "There has not been any opportunity for Ms Allan to make repayment. She tells me she does have sufficient funds to repay the sum."

Mr Stewart explained that his client made the fraudulent deposit transaction to the car dealership over the phone. Allan admitted using electronic means to pay for goods and services by fraud.

Sheriff Peter McCormack deferred sentence on Allan, of the city's Cammo area, until next month for reports. The sheriff said he expected a repayment to be made by Allan to Anna by that date.
