A prison officer, who is accused of having “phone sex” with a prisoner during an alleged “inappropriate relationship”, says she was in tears during calls, the court heard.

Ruth Shmylo, 26, was working at HMP Parc in Bridgend when it was alleged she had an intimate relationship with a prisoner.

Shmylo, from Bridgened, was facing questions in the dock at Cardiff Crown Court today (December 19).

The former prison officer gave evidence on alleged phone sex calls with inmate Harri Pullen, while she was working at the prison. Shmylo denies one count of misconduct in public office.

Defence barrister Clare Wilks told the court how Shmylo told police in her interview about phone sex.

Shmylo was asked how many times this had happened and said: “Harri contacted me and did that a handful of times.”

Ms Wilks continued by asking: “Did you have any sexual arousal from the phone calls?”

As reported by WalesOnline, Shmylo replied: “No, when I became aware Harri was [pleasuring himself] I told him to stop and began crying. He became angry and said ‘You’re making out I’m a nonce’. I repeatedly told him ‘I don’t want this, I don’t want this’.”

The court heard how Shmylo was asked by the police if she would progress a complaint against Harri Pullen.

Shmylo said: “I thought relief, I thought I’m actually telling someone, she’s listening to me and understood what he did to me and I thought that’s what would actually happen.”

Ms Wilks later asked: “Has anyone ever contacted you about progressing your complaint about Harri Pullen?”

    Shmylo said: “No.”

The defendant broke down in tears as she gave evidence to the court yesterday (December 18).

Shmylo said Pullen would call her "continuously" and would threaten other prisoners if she did not answer his calls.

She said: "He made threats to actually harm me, if I had a partner he would kill me and them, threatened to come to my house with my family, threatened to hot water my brother in law, to harm my cats, to come to my house."

When Ms Wilks asked if anything "sexual or physical" had taken place in the prison, Shmylo said: "No."

    The trial continues.
