In the cold winter mornings it can be frustrating to jump in your freezing cold car to set off for work, only to discover your windscreen is covered in ice.

Thankfully, there are a number of options available to clear your windshield – the more traditional methods of scrapers and de-icers, or alternative social media hacks such as preemptively rubbing onions and potatoes on the glass.

However, the motoring experts at Swansway Motor Group have urged drivers to avoid using a common windscreen hack, which could lead to a potentially hefty fine.

Engine idling is the act of unnecessarily leaving your vehicle’s engine running whilst it is stationary.

It is a practice that is illegal under Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, and the experts at Swansway have warned you could be made to pay for doing it to melt the ice on your windscreen.

Moreover, if that fine isn’t settled promptly, then the cost can be escalated to £40.

“We encourage our customers to be mindful of these regulations and consider alternative defrosting methods that don’t involve leaving the engine idling.”

The motoring experts at Swansway Motor Group emphasised the potential seriousness of driving with a windscreen that hasn’t been sufficiently cleared of snow or ice.
