Germany slashed the number of illegal migrants entering the country in the span of a month after introducing tougher border controls.

Federal government statistics showed that there were around 11,029 “unauthorised entries” into the country over its land borders in November – a huge reduction compared with the 18,384 in the previous month. Much of the decline was from migrants from Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, the borders with which have seen a significant tightening of controls.

Around 900 migrants were found along the Germany-Austria border in November – 493 of which were turned back. But just the month before, nearly 7,000 migrants were found in the region. The figures come as Rishi Sunak faces a rebellion from his own party over his handling of the Rwanda plan, which the PM says will work to deter migration to the UK.

Poland also experienced a notable 56 percent drop in attempts to enter illegally to Germany. In the 30 days following the introduction of tougher border checks, the number of migrants illegally entering the country in total fell by 40 percent.

Last month, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser informed the European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, about Germany’s decision to reintroduce controls at its borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland. Despite not being explicitly permitted by the EU’s Schengen borderless travel rules, the move has been extended multiple times, reports SchengenVisa.

Introducing the new internal border controls will now allow the federal police to deploy “the entire bundle of stationary and mobile border police measures,” Ms Faeser said. The new border measures include police carrying out more inspections of people crossing the frontier. They are also increasingly targeting vehicles suspected of being used in smuggling operations.

The decline was also helped by Serbia improving its border controls with Hungary, as many of the migrants crossing here reportedly intended to head on into Germany.

Illegal migration is a subject of fierce debate in Germany and a major priority for Olaf Scholz, who committed to dramatically reducing the figures. Nearly 234,000 people applyied for asylum in Germany from January to September, an increase of 73 percent compared to the same period last year.

Numerous German local authorities had previously expressed concerns about resource constraints for the accommodation, care and integration of refugees. The country is currently hosting over one million refugees from Ukraine following Russia’s February 2022 invasion.
