A former Mr Universe champion died earlier this week after a rich and complex life that even saw him convicted of supplying illegal steroids.<\/p>\n
Shaun 'Dinosaur' Davis passed away at the age of 57, the Daily Star previously reported. The body builder, who once weighed a staggering 334lbs (151kg), picked up the coveted title in 1996 but retired soon after due to ongoing kidney problems.<\/p>\n
But it's not just his sporting career and impressive physique Davis is known for \u2013 he also has a dark past. It has long been known drugs played a factor in Davis' life.<\/p>\n

In 2013 he was found guilty of illegally supplying steroids bought in Thailand as part of a two-man operation which raked in around \u00a316,500. A police raid found a stun gun and \u00a39k in cash in his compatriot Ian Homer's house.<\/p>\n
The pair pleaded guilty to four counts of being concerned in the supply of class C drugs between October 2008 and January 2010. Davis was given a 22-week jail sentence, suspended for two years, and forced to undertake around 200 hours of unpaid work \u2013 as well as shelling out \u00a3700 in costs.<\/p>\n

Aside from his history with illicit substances, Davis also battled health problems throughout his life. After withdrawing from the bodybuilding world with kidney failure, the sportsman had a transplant in 2009.<\/p>\n
But those who knew and admired the star reckon this wasn't the end of his medical trouble. Appearing on the YouTube channel RxMuscle in the wake of his death, bodybuilding journalist Dave Palumbo said: "I don\u2019t really have an official cause of death, but I have to assume it was related to the kidney."<\/p>\n

A cause of death has not yet been given, but medical experts reckon training for the competition decades ago will have left lingering issues which may have contributed to his ultimate demise. Speculative comments from Dr Chris Raynor suggest Davis' body was not able to keep up with his rigorous training requirements.<\/p>\n
"He has done things in his training that have probably contributed to his death," Dr Raynor told The Sun. "Because he had used them (performance-enhancing drugs) for some time, his body was not able to produce a normal level on its own."<\/p>\n
The bodybuilding world was shocked by the news of his passing, with Kuldeep Bhardwaj, a close friend of the Mr Universe winner, saying: "Just received terrible news from Helen Burrows the passing of my friend Shaun Davis. I\u2019m absolutely devastated.<\/p>\n
"Rest in Peace my friend. You were a true inspiration right from the day I met you at school, through your amazing bodybuilding years and after. Your smile and laughter will be missed."<\/p>\n
Further tributes were paid by Long Eaton councillor Richard McRae, who said: "RIP Shaun Davis, a very well-known and respected gentleman who most definitely put Long Eaton on the map.<\/p>\n
"Shaun was Mr Universe in 1996. He was also Mr. UK, Mr Britain, Mr Europe and Mr Pro Universe."<\/p>\n
