The UK could be hit by a "tsunami" of deaths caused by a powerful new 'Frankenstein drug' that is 50 times more powerful than fentanyl.

Nitazenes are flooding the UK drug market, mostly from China, as the flow of opiods from Afghanistan is stemmed by the block imposed by the Taliban, who have taken over poppy fields.

The synthetic opioid drugs, also known as 2-benzyl benzimidazole opioids, have an extremely high potency and pose a substantial risk of overdose, hospitalisation and death.

Drug expert Tony D’Agostino, who trains frontline workers, told the Sun: “They are called Frankenstein drugs because they can be mixed with tablets or powder. They don’t have a ‘face’ or any sort of look.

“They can make their way into the heroin supply chain and Xanax-type drugs that are bought online or through social media.

“The bigger worry is if they make their way into the cannabis market because up to 16million Brits take cannabis."

He added that the drugs were actually created decades ago but were actually shelved due to their power. They were reportedly developed as an alternative to morphine.

“These drugs were developed in the late 1950s by a Swiss company that shelved them because they were too potent," he added.

He said "underground chemists" are looking for nitazenes as the heroin supply from Afghanistan starts to run out.

Additional trouble comes from the fact that pharmaceutical companies have not yet created urine or swab tests for nitazenes, so they can be hard to detect, according to Tony.

Nitazenes are sold as a white powder, crystalline solid, or brown/yellow powder. They have also been found in tablets (fake oxycodone), heroin, ketamine and synthetic cannabinoids.

West Mercia Police reported in September how a drug user bought 'heroin', but instead the substance contained paracetamol, caffeine and a nitazene with no heroin present.

In October, a police raid on a "sophisticated factory" in Waltham Forest recovered approximately 150,000 nitazene tablets.

The drug is thought to have been cut into a batch of drugs in Dublin, causing 57 people to overdose within just a few days.

Former undercover cop Neil Wood put it bluntly and said: “Everyone is expecting this to get worse and more people will die — there’s no doubt about that.”

Retired Birmingham GP Judith Yates, who collates drug statistics, detailed just how powerful the opioids are.

“The strength of these drugs varies but some are 50 times more potent than fentanyl, so just a tiny amount will go a long way for dealers," she said.

"The difficulty is that without a proper pharmaceutical lab you cannot measure it properly and make sure a ‘safe’ dose goes in each bag of heroin.

“The contents of these bags look exactly like heroin.”
