A gorgeous European country has been revealed to be the cheapest to retire in Europe – costing pensioners a ridiculously low £422 a month.

The southeastern European nation is packed full of ancient historical sites, beautiful beaches and amazing food – and was once home to a major empire.

Those Brits who retire in Turkey don’t feel lonely either – the country has seen a surge in visitors since the end of pandemic travel restrictions, Euronews reports.

The country, which is partly European and mainly Asian, is home to around 84 million people – with a whopping 34,000 Brits living there.

Its capital, Istanbul, lies on the Bosphorus River – the boundary between the two continents – and is a melting pot of history, culture and amazing landmarks, where ‘the East meets the West’.

Among its remarkable landmarks include the incredible Blue Mosque, while the Grand Bazaar is an endless maze of fascination.

But it’s perhaps the cheapness of Turkey and its remarkable cities that is the main draw for British retirees.

At just £422 a month for cost of living in the country, a UK pension would go at least four times further than in Britain – where the equivalent cost of living would be £1,652.

The average price for a 100 square metre property in Istanbul – the most expensive city in the country – is about £54,000.
