The freezing cold weather has well and truly hit the UK, with parts of the country witnessing snow and icy driving conditions.

With the chilly conditions comes a common frosty conundrum for motorists – frozen windscreens, as many drivers turn to TikTok for unorthodox hacks on how to combat the icy issue.

From onions and potatoes to sandwich bags full of warm water, some of these unique methods work wonders – however, one suggested hack could prove costly.

A group of car experts and mechanics at Swansway Motor Group have advised drivers on how they can avoid hefty fines this Christmas if they use a common deicing hack.

“If you leave your engine running while defrosting your windscreen on a street, you could face a £20 fixed penalty notice. Moreover, if this charge isn’t settled promptly, it can escalate to £40,” the experts at Swansway commented.

Engine idling is a practice that is illegal under Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

“We encourage our customers to be mindful of these regulations and consider alternative defrosting methods that don’t involve leaving the engine idling.

“At Swansway Motor Group, we want to emphasise the seriousness of driving with a windscreen that’s not properly cleared of snow or ice,” they continued. “We strongly advise our customers to take the necessary time to clear their windscreens thoroughly to avoid these penalties and ensure safe driving conditions.”
