New Island forms off Japan after volcanic eruption

An undersea volcanic eruption created a new, tiny island in Japan, approximately 1,200 kilometres south of Tokyo.

The new landmass emerged, in the wake of a series of violent eruptions that began in October, approximately one kilometre off Iwoto, an island part of the archipelago of the Ogasawara Islands, also known as the Bonin Islands.

Fukashi Maeno, an associate professor at Tokyo University’s earthquake research institute, said the landmass was born out of explosive eruptions resulting from magma interacting with water – known as phreatomagmatic eruptions.

The expert, who flew over the site at the end of October, observed during the eruption plumes of smoke and ash rising more than 50 metres high in the sky every few minutes.

Large rocks, he added in an interview with the Kyodo news agency, also hurtled through the air, while the colour of the sea changed where the eruptions were taking place.

The new island measures about 100 metres in diameter at the time, Professor Maeno has observed. But it could grow larger and change its shape if the volcanic activity continues.

Similarly, the life span of this new island may be short, as it could disappear beneath the waves due to erosion, the expert added, a destiny shared by other landmasses that had emerged in the area in 1904, 1914 and 1986.

Another Japanese island that slipped beneath the waves likely due to erosion by wind and by drift ice is Esanbe Hanakita Kojima.
