Suella Braverman has sparked outrage after an op-ed published in The Times accused police of bias towards protest groups and called pro-Palestinian protesters “hate marchers”.

She wrote: “Rightwing and nationalist protesters who engage in aggression are rightly met with a stern response yet pro-Palestinian mobs displaying almost identical behaviour are largely ignored, even when clearly breaking the law?

“I have spoken to serving and former police officers who have noted this double standard.”

The Home Secretary is now facing calls from both Labour and the Liberal Democrats to be sacked.

There are concerns her comments may incite violence against police officers this weekend, when thousands of protesters are planning to descend upon London for a Pro-Palestine march.

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey said the Prime Minister should sack Ms Braverman, saying: “Suella Braverman is now putting police officers in harm’s way ahead of far-right protesters flocking to the capital this weekend.

“The Home Secretary’s irresponsible words and foul actions have significantly increased the likelihood of unrest this weekend and the risk of violence towards officers.”

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said in the Commons: “Does this Government still believe in the operational independence of the police, and how can it do so while this Home Secretary is in post?”

However, Lee Anderson has come to Ms Braverman’s defence saying: “The Home Secretary is only saying what most people are thinking.

“She is allowed to comment on and criticise the Met Police. Anyone who thinks her comments are outrageous need to get out more.”

Former Brexit minister Lord David Frost also defended Ms Braverman tweeting: “She is in my view correct to call out a lack of even-handedness in the way some demonstrations, and indeed some opinions, are policed. Saying anything else invites people to disbelieve their eyes.”
