As war rages in the Middle East thousands of pro-Palestine supporters around the world have taken to the streets and belted out the chant ‘From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free’.

Pro-Palestinan and pro-Israel protestors have both exercised the right to demonstate against the bloodshed of a war that has claimed more than 10,000 lives since the Hamas terror attacks of October 7.

Supporters of both sides have rallied in London, New York, Sydney and other cities around the globe, expressing their horror at the conflict, including the abduction by Hamas terrorists of more than 240 men, women and children.

However, some of the language used has taken on a darker, more antisemitic tone, and in Europe Stars of David have been daubed on Jewish homes in chilling echoes of the Nazis.

Some say the slogan from the “River to the Sea” holds a darker meaning than simple Palestinian self-determinism and that it calls for the destruction of Israel, others feel it champions the right of Palestinians to have their own state.

Here we look at some of the history behind the song.
