A former spy handler believes Britain is riddled with undercover foreign agents after it was revealed at the weekend two men were arrested under the Official Secrets Act in March.<\/p>\n
M15 believes China is using espionage in an attempt to steal our secrets.<\/p>\n
But we can rest easy as: \u201cThe UK spy game is better than anywhere else,\u201d vows Ava Glass, who was hired by former Home Secretary John Reid and PM Tony Blair as a spy communications consultant.<\/p>\n

She says: \u201cAfter Alexander Litvinenko they threw out publicly a lot of Russians they said were spies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they can publicly identify 400 there\u2019s at least 1,000.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last month three Bulgarians living in the UK were charged on suspicion of espionage on behalf of Russia. <\/p>\n
Ava, a former investigative journalist in her native US, where she attended brutal homicide investigations alongside the FBI, says: \u201cIf they\u2019re throwing out three random Bulgarians how many more agents are there? A lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Tories are currently under fire for the Department for Education\u2019s handling of the discovery of dangerous lightweight concrete usage in schools, leading to closures around the country.<\/p>\n
Ava, now a novelist tipped as the female Ian Fleming after creating female spy character Emma Makepeace, says spies don\u2019t listen to the government.<\/p>\n
She continues: \u201cSpies believe in protecting the country; they\u2019re ruthless, intelligent and I feel safer for having them there.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know some people still in that world.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe people on the ground are still doing the same good work. \u201cThey don\u2019t care who is in power \u2013 they ignore the chaos at the top.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would challenge any government to tell spies what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
In her new novel The Traitor, out on Thursday (September 14), Ava\u2019s spy Emma Makepeace goes undercover on a superyacht owned by a Russian oligarch hunting for a chemical weapons supplier believed to be linked to the murder of a fellow M16 operative.<\/p>\n
As the war between Russia and Ukraine continues to rage, questions over whether despot Vladimir Putin\u2019s former pal turned rebellion leader, Wagner group head honcho Yevgeny Prigozhin\u2019s supposed death last month in a plane crash was genuine. <\/p>\n
Ava says: \u201cWe can\u2019t be certain as we thought he was dead before. He obviously knew it was coming, and an assassination attempt.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf he wanted to disappear, that\u2019s how to do it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s so World War Two it blows my mind, it\u2019s extraordinary.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the Cold War there were only two superpowers.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow there\u2019s more and while we withdrew for a while I don\u2019t know if it will ever be over. This tension might be permanent.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut people can take comfort that there\u2019s never been a time everyone loved their neighbour.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think Putin\u2019s going to push the button but it\u2019s awful for Ukraine.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd after Putin I believe comes something worse.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite talk of it becoming a superpower in its own right, Ava does not believe that AI will replace human spies.<\/p>\n
She says: \u201cLooking at the ways you can melt into a crowd, feet on the ground are never going away.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you can get a job in the British government as a cleaner or coffee shop worker you can melt into a crowd.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a life of deception on every level.\u201d<\/p>\n
Due to her background in crime reporting, Ava closely watched the case of former nurse Lucy Letby, Britain\u2019s most prolific serial killer of children.<\/p>\n
The 49-year-old says: \u201cWhen looking at a single homicide you\u2019re looking at the \u2018why\u2019 but with mass murder there\u2019s sometimes no explanation to give comfort other than people went crazy.<\/p>\n
\u201cLetby must be a psychopath.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fact she was so manipulative is fascinating but the question is why the hospital didn\u2019t do something sooner \u2013 it\u2019s repulsive.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel for the families.\u201d<\/p>\n
