<\/p>\nIncredible images show what the burned-out cargo ship Fremantle Highway looks like now after a devastating fire last month.<\/p>\n
The vessel – essentially now a floating graveyard for destroyed luxury cars – caught on fire just off the coast of the Netherlands on July 25 while travelling from the German port city of Bremerhaven to Egypt.<\/p>\n
It was carrying nearly 4,000 cars estimated to be worth just under \u00a3100million – and it is thought some 2,700 were destroyed.<\/p>\n

Tragically one of the crew members died in the blaze. The other 22 managed to escape with some jumping into the sea. Some were airlifted to hospital due to smoke inhalation.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month tugboats dragged Fremantle Highway in from the North Sea to the Dutch port of Eemshaven for salvaging. The process of unloading the salvageable cars started on Saturday (August 19).<\/p>\n
Now, the first images from inside the fire-ravaged 18,500 ton vessel have emerged.<\/p>\n
The snaps from the upper decks show the skeletons of cars, covered in soot and completely unrecognisable from what they once were. <\/p>\n

Roughly 1,100 cars managed to avoid the flames as they were packed into the lower four floors. <\/p>\n
Images also showed the roadworthy cars being driven off Fremantle Highway over the weekend, after being cleaned in a mobile car wash. <\/p>\n
Recovery companies Boskalis and Multraship said the water being used to wash the vehicles will be collected and disposed of afterwards. <\/p>\n

The two firms expect the removal operation to take more than a week.<\/p>\n
The cargo ship will be allowed to remain in the port until late October when it will be towed elsewhere and likely scrapped. <\/p>\n
The cause of the blaze is still unclear. Emergency services initially suggested an electric car battery was responsible – but the salvage team have since cast down on this. <\/p>\n

Boskalis and Multraship were not willing to comment about a possible cause but maintain the investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n
