For Lords who accept ministerial positions, this drops to just \u00a336,366 if they live outside of London, and a reduced rate for those Peers who live in London.<\/p>\n
Outside jobs are also banned for Peers with ministerial roles, acting as another major deterrent.<\/p>\n
In July, Rishi Sunak appointed two new peers and immediately appointed them to Government roles in a sign of his struggles.<\/p>\n
A Lords source told the express that while he\u2019d only heard anecdotal word of Mr Sunak\u2019s appointments struggles, \u201cof course it\u2019s true\u201d.<\/p>\n

More info<\/p>\n A source told the Times the headache was making the PM\u2019s summer reshuffle more complicated, as it\u2019s becoming \u201cmuch harder\u201d to find replacements for ministers who want to stand down.<\/p>\n One peer reportedly turned down a ministerial role because the allowance \u201cwouldn\u2019t even cover the school fees\u201d for their children.<\/p>\n The problem is exacerbated for departments like the Foreign Office, Ministry of Defence, and Business and Trade, which require ministers to spend large amounts of their time travelling abroad.<\/p>\n \u201cIn those cases you can\u2019t even claim the daily allowance.\u201d<\/p>\n The PM is also constrained by the 1975 Ministerial Salaries Act, which limits the number of paid Government ministers to 109 positions.<\/p>\n Since then, the Government has grown in size considerably, leaving the PM\u2019s hands tied over who can be paid for their work.<\/p>\n A Tory peer said: \u201cMore and more of the paid jobs are being hoovered up by MPs in the Commons, leaving more unpaid roles to fill in the House of Lords.<\/p>\n \u201cYou can always find ambitious flunkies who will do it \u2014 but it is much harder to find anyone good.\u201d<\/p>\n
