A fuming bloke chucked a Christmas tree at his wife because she asked him to help cook dinner and accidentally splashed him with water from a spoon, cops say.

Richard Daniel Atchison, 52, is accused of carrying out the odd attack at the pair’s Fruitland Park home in Florida, US.

According to an arrest affidavit, Atchison raged at the suggestion he should contribute to the cooking and packed his belongings to leave in his car – but quickly changed his mind and instead insisted that his wife should leave instead.

As she tried to leave the apartment, Atchison reportedly blocked the door and pushed her away, making her stumble.

He then picked up the Christmas tree and lobbed it at his alleged victim as it split in two.

Cops arrived at the scene to find the married couple yelling at each other with Atchison stopping his wife from leaving the building.

He admitted to officers that he had "lost his temper" and decided to leave but told his wife to do so instead because he had been drinking.

The fight was "verbal only and no physical contact was made that evening", he also claimed.

Atchinson, who has a string of previous convictions, was arrested on felony charges including false imprisonment, violation of an injunction and domestic battery.

He has frequently been locked up at the Lake County Jail for a variety of offences, including five for domestic violence, a police spokesperson told the Daily Mail.

Following the affidavit, he was held at the Lake County Jail on an $8,000 (£6,500) bond which he paid on Tuesday (December 13).
