Terrifying new skin-rotting tranq rips through cities and zombifies bodies

A new drug is ripping through cities and turning people into "zombies."

Tranq – real name Xylazine – has been referred to as the “zombie drug” because it can cause humans to rot underneath their skin.

It first gained popularity in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA, but has since drifted west, gaining footholds in California’s major cities San Francisco and Los Angeles.

It was initially thought to have been used for cutting heroin, but more recently has begun appearing mixed in with various drugs including the deadly fentanyl.

Xylazine is approved in the USA for use by vets – but the Food and Drug Administration has not approved it for use on humans because it isn’t safe.

Perhaps the most scary part is that one of the most common overdose treatment drugs available, naloxone, can only have a limited effect on people who take too much Xylazine.

The drug is a non-opiate with sedative-like effects on humans.

This can include slowed breathing and sleepiness. However, it also has the ability to rot flesh.

It can cause lesions to appear on the skin and they can spread quickly with the more exposure the body has to the drug.

There is also an increases in the risk of an overdose when mixed with other illegal drugs.

Ulcerations cause dead skin to form and, in extreme cases, amputation is necessary.

In the USA, the drug isn’t a controlled substance and is rarely tested for by toxicology departments.

Wounds are particularly common around the sites of injection.

Speaking to the New York Times Tracey McCann, 39, said: “I’d wake up in the morning crying because my arms were dying.

Speaking toSky News , Sam, 28, said: “Tranq is basically zombifying people's bodies. Until nine months ago, I never had wounds. Now, there are holes in my legs and feet.

“Just cleaning them is so painful. The wound care truck put on band-aids but I kept them on for a week in the rain and it all looked a hundred times worse.”
