Rosehouse Botanicals is one of Denver's best plant stores

On a cold day along South Broadway, there is nothing quite as soothing as pushing open the worn, heavy door of Rosehouse Botanicals and walking into a warm jungle.

A variety of houseplants line the walls, floors, tables and ceilings. Palms tower above you, snake plants reach out to shake your hand, and some unique philodendron micans shuffle their leaves, ready to be admired.

Co-owners Maurice Ka and Kristin Schuch, who are helped by plant caretaker Sarah Gilstrap, opened Rosehouse three years ago in a narrow but deep building between two vintage clothing stores. Its relatively small storefront catches passersby with bright pink paint, like a venus flytrap catching its prey.

You see, the charm of Rosehouse isn’t just its great selection of indoor plants. It’s also the vibe.

The shop is warm and cozy. When you walk in, you may be hit with a wave of incense or bright sunlight streaming through the large front window. The layout is different almost every time you step in. (It’s unclear if it’s rearranged by the staff or by the plants themselves.) The shop lures in everyone from tattooed twentysomethings with wide-legged jeans to moms carrying kids who fell asleep after brunch.

Start out by examining the green darlings at the front, then step over to inspect the books on the wall, which range from foraging guides to Housecare 101. Walk deeper in and stumble upon a small collection of seeds and herbs. More spiritual products are among the greenery, from a wall of teas to a candle display.

It’s an exciting, bewitching vibe. Maybe it’s just a spell. And once you step back out onto the busy South Broadway sidewalk, you might find yourself carrying a cactus for your desk, loose leaf tea for your partner with a cold, or a tincture for a friend who mentioned a headache.

Rosehouse Botanicals is at 14 S. Broadway. It is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays. 303-923-3281; rosehousebotanicals.com.
