Paedo who used police station wifi to download child sexual abuse images jailed

A homeless man staying at a hostel in Peoria, Illinois, logged into the wifi network of a police station across the road in order to download vile child abuse images and video.

According to a press release from the US Attorney's Office of the Central District Court of Illinois, 61-year-old Nicky McDonald downloaded the images and videos to his phone using the Peoria Police Department's free wi-fi.

The rescue mission where McDonald was staying is located at 601 SW Adams Street, directly opposite Peoria Police Department headquarters.

McDonald had been required to register as a sex offender under Illinois law since he pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a minor in in 1993.

McDonald was also convicted of attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a minor in 1997.

At a court hearing on February 11, McDonald entered guilty to downloading and possessing the vile images in August 2019.

He told a Peoria court that as he was homeless, he had used the Peoria Police Department's free wi-fi to view and download the images and videos onto his phone.

McDonald has been in Peoria County custody since he was arrested and charged in October 2019.

He was indicted on the federal charges in January 2020, and was ordered to remain detained in the custody of the US Marshals Service.

U.S. District Judge James Shadid sentenced McDonald to 15 years in jail, and ordered that after his release the twisted perv should remain on supervised release for a the rest of his life.

Since that incident, Peoria Police have password protected their WiFi access.
