Meghan ‘more influential’ than Queen herself and even Kate Middleton, study says

Meghan Markle has been named as "the world's most influential royal" after a new study found she has far more of an impact online than even the Queen.

In a study of online traction which analysed Instagram hashtags, Google searches and news articles, the Duchess of Sussex, 40, came out on top, pipping Her Majesty into second place.

And the researchers believe Meghan, who quit her Royal duties with husband Prince Harry last year, may even be the most influential woman in the world.

Data shows Meghan pulls in 7.4 million Google searches a month and features in 10.4 million Instagram hashtags and 11,200 articles in the past year, making her the most mentioned and searched-for royal of 2021.

The study, commissioned by Design Bundles, found that Meghan is well out in first place, with the Queen in second and Kate Middleton in third.

A spokesperson for Design Bundles said: “Meghan Markle has an extraordinary influence around the world, ever since she and Prince Harry’s relationship took the world by storm in 2017.

“Meghan’s bravery and boldness in speaking up about issues such as racism, parental leave and empowering women are unlike any other Royal, and her voice is a powerful and enduring one.

“The Duchess of Sussex is deeply committed to alleviating world issues through her charity work, and despite no longer being a working Royal, proves that her influence is positive and unchanging.”

Queen Elizabeth appeared in 10.3 million Instagram hashtags, 3.3 million Google searches per month and 2,200 articles, the study found.

And while Kate Middleton was the Instagram queen, featuring in 13 million Instagram hashtags, her overall online footprint was still dwarfed by Meghan’s.

Prince Harry came in fourth and Princess Diana, who died in 1997, was fifth having been mentioned in 858,343 Instagram hashtags and two million internet searches. She was also mentioned in 3,000 articles in the past year.

The spokesman added: "The Queen is a global style icon herself, creating a popular trend with her habit of wearing exquisitely colour blocked clothes, in bright, stand-out colours, so one can always locate her in a crowd.”
