Prince William and Kate Middleton felt "overshadowed" by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and used "sharp-elbowed tactics" to keep them in line, an expert claims.
Writing for the Daily Mail, royal historian Robert Lacey said friends of the two Princes were sympathetic to both brothers' plights and argued William and Kate were not innocent in the royal fallout.
"Friends of William and Kate are willing to concede the jealousy the Cambridges once felt at being overshadowed by the megawatt younger brother and his wife," Lacey wrote.

"History will reveal, they agree, how their friends William and Kate were guilty of some 'sharp-elbowed' tactics in seeking to keep Harry and Meghan in their place."
As for William, Lacey said the Prince's "short temper" won't have helped ease tensions between the Waleses and the Sussexes.
"And what about William's notoriously short temper? Which of the two brothers was so beside himself with rage in January 2020 that he declined to attend the family lunch arranged by the Queen before the Sandringham Summit?
"Both sets of friends see the case for the other side, and seek to urge compromise upon their own particular Prince."
Lacey similarly reported that Harry's friends had confessed Meghan could be "a 500% nightmare."
Harry and Meghan's 'prima donna' efforts to hide Archie's birth 'didn't impress' William
"Sussex supporters have noted the bizarre combination of self-promotion and self-pity that characterises Meghan, and can see why it has infuriated William," he wrote.
"'Meghan can be a 500% nightmare,' some close friends of Harry are among the first to admit. 'The never-ending PR. She's just so . . . American!'"
And the brothers' feud is not expected to be helped by Harry and Meghan's upcoming Netflix documentary, due to land on the platform on December 8.
The Sussexes have already come under fire for the trailers advertising the six-part series, one of which an expert told the Daily Star makes Kate Middleton look like the "wicked witch of Wales".
In the first trailer for the show, released on December 1, Harry is heard saying: "No one sees what's happening behind closed doors," with a shot of Meghan holding her face in her hands which then flips to an image of Prince William and Kate Middleton glaring at the camera.
"I had to do everything I could to protect my family," Harry continues.

And in a second trailer released this week, Harry accuses his family of playing a "dirty game."
"There's a hierarchy of the family. You know, there's leaking, but there's also planting of stories," Harry narrated over clips of the film.
The trailer ends with the Prince declaring: "No one knows the full truth. We know the full truth."
