Prince Harry and Meghan Markle receiving an award is "insulting in many ways to the Royal Family", a commentator claims.

Daisy McAndrew, a British Royal commentator, has criticised the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for "really stepping into the political sphere" as they hope to "make their bed" in liberal America.

Tonight (December 6), the couple will step up to accept the Ripple of Hope Award for their "heroic" stand against "structural racism", the Express reports.

For nearly 50 years, the prize named after Robert F. Kennedy, has honored exemplary leaders who have "demonstrated an unwavering commitment to social change and worked to protect and advance equity, justice, and human rights".

Robert Kennedy's daughter, Kerry praised Harry and Meghan after claiming to Oprah Winfrey last year that they had been questioned about the colour of their son Archie's skin ahead of his birth.

According to Ms Kennedy, the couple as exemplified the "moral courage" her late father called for during a speech against apartheid in South Africa.

Commenting on Ms Kennedy's statement about the award, Ms McAndrew told TalkTV: "There are two audiences here that will have very, very different reactions to this statement.

"This will go down really well in liberal America, which is arguably the most important demographic for Harry and Meghan.

"That is where they want to make their bed and make their money, and that is where they've staked their claim.

"And it will go down pretty badly for those who really look at it in detail on this side of the pond because it's insulting, in many ways to the Royal Family. The Royal Family that many Brits still feel protective of and they don't recognise this as the Royal Family they think of."

She added: "And that leads you to the next decision, why are Harry and Meghan allowing this? This is Meghan with Harry behind her, really stepping into the political sphere."

Outlining the motivation behind the decision to award the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Ms Kennedy said: "They went to the oldest institution in UK history and told them what they were doing wrong, that they couldn't have structural racism within the institution, that they could not maintain a misunderstanding about mental health.

"They knew that if they did this there would be consequences, that they would be ostracised, they would lose their family, their position within this structure, and that people would blame them for it.

"They have done it anyway because they believed they couldn't live with themselves if they didn't question this authority. I think they have been heroic in taking this step."
