A gunman has opened fire at a Christmas choir performance on the steps of a cathedral in New York.

The shooting took place just after 4pm local time (9pm UK time) outside the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in Manhattan.

Police shot back at the suspect, leaving him in a critical condition and has been rushed to a local hospital, according to a New York City Police Department spokesman.

Sergeant Edward Riley said the gunman had fired on police, but no officers were injured.

Church goers started to leave the cathedral after a 45-minute concert when a series of shots was heard, according to MSN which sent the congregation running down the street screaming in panic.
