Driver seriously injured after striking CPS car on I-70 near Watkins
A driver and a Colorado state trooper were injured early Friday morning when a vehicle hit the trooper’s patrol car on Interstate 70 near Watkins.
The crash happened at about 3 a.m. in the westbound lanes and the driver of the vehicle that hit the CSP vehicle suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital, said Master Trooper Gary Cutler. The trooper, who was in her vehicle when it was hit, sustained minor injuries.
The trooper was parked off to the side of the highway, with lights flashing, and was there to investigate and aid the driver of a pickup truck that had slid into a guiderail, Cutler said. That’s when the driver of a blue Acura hit the CSP car.
A CSP tweet, just before 7 a.m., mistakenly reported that all injuries were minor. There was a passenger in Acura who was not injured, Cutler said.
The westbound lanes of the highway were shut down near Manila Road by the crash. The lanes reopened at about 6 a.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
An investigation is ongoing, Cutler said.
