Dramatic moment Russian fighter jet intercepts two US nuclear bombers

A Russian fighter jet has been scrambled to intercept an American strategic bomber plane over the Black Sea in the second aerial confrontation between the two nations in a week, Russia has claimed. The Russian foreign ministry said an Su-35 fighter jet was sent to intercept two B-52 US strategic bombers that, they alleged, were heading towards the Russian Federation state border, with footage appearing to confirm the confrontation on Tuesday.

The incident came a week after two Russian Su-27 fighter jets were accused by the US of behaving “recklessly” as they collided into an American surveillance drone, again over the Black Sea, in what was the first known confrontation since Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine last February.

Russia’s state-owned TASS news agency said that the National Defence Control Centre of Russia’s Ministry of Defence identified the two US planes as B-52H strategic bombers.

“On March 20, 2023, the radars of the air defence forces of the Western Military District on duty detected two air targets flying in the direction of the state border of the Russian Federation over the Baltic Sea,” the ministry said, according to TASS.

The Su-35 fighter was scrambled to prevent “a violation of the state border” by the US aircraft, the ministry said, adding that the aircraft reached a “designated air patrol area”.

“After the foreign military aircraft moved away from the state border of the Russian Federation, the Russian plane returned to its home base,” the ministry said, adding that the Su-35 was strictly in line with international air law.

“No violation of the state border of the Russian Federation was permitted,” the ministry said.

Dramatic footage purporting to show the US B-52 bomber from the cockpit of the Russian fighter jet has now appeared on social media.

It shows one of the two US aircraft flying in the air, though the video could not be geolocated nor time-stamped.

The incident is believed to have happened on Monday and two US planes were seen being escorted by Polish fighter jets yesterday.

The US has not commented on the video or the claims that their planes were heading towards the Russian border.
