The Coast Guard had to be called out after up to 60 people piled into a brawl on the dance floor of a cruise ship, according to reports.

The ship was heading to dock in New York City when the scrap inside a nightclub within the Carnival Magic started around 5.20am, the NYPD said.

The initial fight was between just two people, but dozens more joined the fray, according to reports in the US.

Security on board attempted to break up the fight, but then called for assistance from the Coast Guard, police said. The Coast Guard took the ship back to port.

Bottles and glasses were reportedly used as weapons during the fracas and injuries were reported, although none appeared to be serious.

A thirty second clip of the brawl posted on Twitter by a passenger shows a security guard attempt to restore calm as dozens of people throw punches to the tune of smashing glass.

His efforts are in vain as several people pile on to a brawl as fists fly everywhere as people screamed.

NYPD officers were on hand as passengers disembarked the ship, New York Post stated.

The cruise had departed from the Cape Liberty Cruise Port in New Jersey on June 20, traveled to Dominicana, Turks and Caicos and a private island in the Bahamas before returning to the East Coast, according to an online tracker.

Confusion over whether the fight would be handled by the NYPD, New Jersey authorities, or if it happened in international waters has made details on arrests scant for now.

“Last night while Carnival Magic was returning to New York, a number of guests were involved in an altercation in a nightclub,” the cruise liner said in a statement today, June 29.

“Thankfully no serious injuries were reported and our onboard security team intervened.

“The ship arrived as scheduled this morning and shoreside law enforcement authorities were notified and met the ship to interview suspects and witnesses and conduct an investigation.”
