Coronavirus sees UK supermarkets install cough-proof screens at checkouts

Morrisons and Lidl have installed cough-proof screens at checkouts to protect their staff amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The supermarkets are rolling out the protective perspex screens as the UK goes into lockdown over the pandemic.

The measures have been brought in amid dramatic scenes at supermarkets as thousands of people cram into stores and panic buy.

With huge numbers of customers clearing the shelves amid the global crisis, the supermarkets are now taking drastic measures.

The likes of Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Morrisons, Iceland and Sainsbury’s have already been altering their opening times and putting in limits on the number of items people can buy.

And now Morrisons and Lidl have installed the cough-proof screens in another new measure.

The protective screens are one and a half metres wide and nearly one metre high.

The clear screens feature messages to explain the social distancing measure and direct customers to small waist-height windows for transactions.

Christian Härtnagel, CEO at Lidl GB, said: “The safety of our colleagues and customers continues to be a key priority for us, which is why all of our stores here in Great Britain will be fitted with protection screens at checkouts.

“We hope that this additional safeguard will help to provide extra reassurance for those both working and shopping in our stores.

“We are eternally grateful to all of our store teams who are working hard every day to support their communities.

"And, we would once again like to thank customers for their consideration during this very challenging time.”

Announcing it too is taking the measure, Morrisons tweeted: “We’re installing new protective screens at all our store checkouts this week, to help keep our customers and our colleagues safe.
