Coronavirus China: ‘Symbolic’ day for nation as they record ZERO new COVID-19 cases

Stephen McDonald stated that there are zero new cases of coronavirus in China apart from a dozen “who are coming in from overseas”. The coronavirus outbreak started in the Chinese city of Wuhan and gripped the nation between December 2019 and January 2020. However, following drastic lockdown measures China has seen the cases within the country decrease rapidly with 70,000 people recovering from being infected with COVID-19.

Mr McDonald said: “It is certainly a big day in China, symbolically at least.

“To go from the days where we had 80,000 infections to the last 24 hours where they have added zero new infections in the whole of the country in terms of home-grown cases.

“The only extra infections we are getting now are the dozens who are coming in from overseas.

“Also, to ram home the symbolism of this, in Wuhan city where this global emergency first began, people there are being allowed out today for the first time for a month and a half.

“If we assume that the overall trend is instructive more than 80,000 infections at the peak, we are now down to 7,000 people currently infected so that is now 70,000 people have come through and recovered.”

However, yesterday a Professor of Public Health predicted that will have to endure a devastating “second wave” of COVID-19 infections.

Professor Ben Cowling predicted that China will see another increase in coronavirus cases “in a month or two” during an interview with Sky News’ Adam Boulton.

Professor Cowling also argued that using lockdown as a measure to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic will bring several issues.

He stated that the coronavirus infection “numbers will keep coming back” when the period of lockdown ends and as a result, multiple lockdown periods will need to be imposed.

Mr Boulton said: “Looking at the China experience they are saying you can lock this down but when you take the controls off you will get a second wave.

“Are there any signs yet of a second wave of infection?”

Professor Cowling replied: “There are no signs yet but that is what we expect to happen.

“It is like resetting the clock every time.

“In Wuhan and other parts of China, they have reset the clock to early December.

“So we will see in a month or two that the case numbers will gradually come up and then maybe they need to do another lockdown.

“I think the issues with lockdowns are that you need to keep doing it again because the numbers keep coming back up.”
