A British doctor has been fatally shot in the head after a stray bullet was fired into his apartment from across the road.

Dr Matthew Wilson was visiting friends in the US state of Georgia when he was suddenly killed in a reckless incident in the middle of the night, local police in Brookhaven said.

The 31-year-old doctor from Surrey died from a gunshot wound to the head on Sunday after a bullet was fired into his apartment from a different building.

Police have said that they do not believe Dr Wilson was targeted deliberately and that a group next door to his building had "recklessly" discharged the weapon.

Reports from 11Alive News say officers received multiple calls at around 2am about shots being fired from an apartment in the 3600 block of Bufod Hwy in Brookhaven, Atlanta.

As the officers investigated the area, they received another call notifying them of a man being shot in the 3100 apartment block across the way on Clairmont Road.

Reports from police say once they had reached the Clairmont Road apartment, they found the 31-year-old doctor with a single gunshot wound to his head.

He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Police say that no suspects have been arrested in connection with the reckless shooting, and that it appears Wilson was shot randomly and accidentally.

Officers described the shooting as "a random act involving individuals participating in the reckless discharge of a firearm which led to the tragic death of Mr. Wilson".

"[He] was in town from England visiting loved ones when the incident occurred," they added in a statement.

A foreign office spokesperson said: "We are supporting family of [a] British man following his death in the USA, and are in contact with US authorities".
