Since the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old unarmed black man in Minneapolis, other deaths from systemic police brutality have come to the forefront. Floyd died after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes, and the footage has been widely shared on social media.

All four officers present at his death have now been arrested, and Chauvin has had his charge upgraded to second-degree murder.

Fury over the killing of African-American medical worker Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky, by the police has also been growing, driving tense demonstrations in the city.

She was also referred to by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, in her video where she talks about racial discrimination, released yesterday, which has helped publicise her case.

The FBI has also opened an investigation into her death, and Robert Brown, special agent in charge for the FBI Louisville, issued a statement Thursday that said in part: “The FBI will collect all available facts and evidence and will ensure that the investigation is conducted in a fair, thorough and impartial manner.”

As this is an ongoing investigation, Mr Brown said they aren’t able to comment further.

Shortly after midnight on March 13, 2020, Louisville police, executing a search warrant for narcotics, used a battering ram to crash into the apartment of Taylor.

Mr Walker, believing their home was being broken into, took his gun and fired a shot, which hit one of the officers in the leg.

Taylor was then shot eight times by plain clothes officers and died at the scene.

The police fired more than 22 rounds.

The harrowing transcript of her partner’s 911 call has now been released.

Her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, told an operator: “I don’t know what happened … somebody kicked in the door and shot my girlfriend.”

When asked where Taylor had been shot, Walker replied: “I don’t know, she is on the ground right now. I don’t know, I don’t know.”

He added that Taylor was unresponsive, yelling “Help!” and “Oh my God,” throughout the two-minute call.

The audio of the call was released by an attorney for Taylor’s family.

It later emerged the police were looking for a suspect who was already in police custody.
