The Met Office has forecast colder and wetter conditions over the weekend as autumn begins to set in the UK.

Heavy rain will be hitting the south of the country whilst in the north temperatures are set to drop, with even a chance of snow in Scotland.

However by the end of next week, conditions are likely to become milder and more typical for the time of year.

The Met Office forecast for Thursday into Friday reads: “A band of rain, heavy at times, will move slowly southeastwards across Wales and England.

“Turning clearer in the northwest and becoming chilly, with a few fog patches forming. Showery in the far northwest.

“Outbreaks of rain clearing most parts but persisting across parts of southeast England, heavy in places, especially near coasts.

“Sunny spells elsewhere with a few showers in the northwest.”

Then for Saturday into Monday it forecasts: “Heavy rain clearing southeast England Saturday, otherwise mainly fine with a few showers.

“Rain and wind spreading southeast Sunday and Monday; scattered showers and sunny spells following. Turning colder.”

Friday will also see the Autumn Equinox occur, officially marking the first day of the new season in the Northern Hemisphere.

The sun will rise on Friday directly in the east and set directly in the west.

The fresher weather will bring relief to some following one of the hottest and driest summers on record.

Temperatures have also begun to drop, with highs of 15C in the north dipping down to just 11C into next week.

On Saturday some areas could see the mercury struggle to get into double figures.

This cold snap looks likely to last well into next week across the country.
