The UK completed its divorce from the European Union at the end of last year after a post-Brexit trade deal was agreed between the two sides following nearly a year of intense and at timers, bitter talks. Eurocrat Guy Verhofstadt has been a furiously vocal critic of Britain since the country voted to leave the EU during the historic referendum of 2016. He has continued these attacks throughout the course of 2021, sparking numerous angry backlashes from Britons over his controversial comments.

Now the MEP has triggered a new row with an attack on Mr Johnson and his former chief adviser Dominic Cummings over the way they managed Brexit.

Mr Vehofstadt took to Twitter to post an article about Mr Cummings firing several claims towards the Prime Minister and his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, claiming he is “unfit” to lead the country.

He tweeted alongside this: “All bravado & show but no understanding or care for the consequences.

“This is how Cumming & Johnson tackled Brexit too.

“Their ‘win’ was everybody’s loss.”

“Maybe a Westminster hearing can help get to that truth too.”

But the outburst from the Brexit opponent has once again sparked a furious reaction from dozens of Britons on Twitter.

One wrote: “The truth is we wanted to leave the EU. Get over it.”

A second person tweeted: “Nope! It was a win for us all. Away from you.

“A Brexit benefit right there. Thanks Boris.”

Another Twitter user mocked the outspoken MEP, and commented: “It’s over Guy. The #Eu is dead. Long live Europe.”

Several other people referred back to the EU’s disastrous Covid vaccine programme, which has seen the bloc languishing far behind the UK and being forced to tackle yet another wave of infections throughout the continent.

One person wrote: “Will Ursula call for an enquiry on the EUs response?

“Especially where vaccine is concerned? I’ll wait…”

Another Twitter user added: “If only we would have joined you vaccine programme.”

The latest backlash towards Mr Verhofstadt came just hours after he launched into another Brexit outburst where he lashed out at the UK Government.

The MEP retweeted an article about European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen saying trade problems in Northern Ireland have been caused by Brexit.

Mr Verhofstadt tweeted: Never forget: this Brexit was a result of choices made by the British Government.

“Different choices were also possible. But the protocol is the only way to protect peace in Northern Ireland.

“Everyone has come to terms with this except those in the UK who cheered it on!”
